All of the people I listened too sounded completley defeated, hopeless, and miserable. Like Anna Novak sounded in her working all day in the Packing House. They all sounded run down and beat, as if they had nothing to live for, like Mr. Garavelli, Stonecutter in his all day journey stone cutting. He goes to work not knowing if he will come home or not, he explains that he was put in better equipment but he also states that men still die. They all seem like they hate eveything they do. For example Jim Cole worked as a butcher, but hated his job. He wanted to join the AFL union, but he couldnt because he was african american. I am sure the last thing Jim Cole wanted to be doing was butchering meat. The african americans where chosen for some jobs by there looks and whether or not they looked honest. Take Mrs. Marie Haggerty for example, she was a made and was newly chosen to maid in a house. As she was making the bed she noticed a five dollar bill and she knew she was being tested for her honesty, but she didnt know whether or not to take it or not. Mrs. Mayme Reese who was an African- American housewife got together with her friends, not that often, but when they did it wasn't like what the white women did for fun it was just to make quilts. They represent the time period and area of the country being studied because the jobs they did showed that they were working down south and didnt have lavish lives. Also segregation during this time period wasn't nearly like how it was in the north, it was way worse in the south, To be working in the south in a mill, or mine or anything was ten times worse if you where working in the south. Slaves existed in the south just like how segregation lasted long in the North. People during the depression where hopeless and where willing to do anything to survive.
